Chernihiv: The face of the city

Modern historians believe that the city of Chernihiv was founded more than 1300 years ago. It is a city of wise princes, courageous warriors, and talented masters, and it is also known as “a city of golden domes”. Over the thirteen centuries of the history of Chernihiv, there have been many leaders and visionaries who have helped to develop the “aura” of the city and expose its treasures to many others.

Since 1991 Chernihiv has been an oblast and rayon center of a young Eastern European independent state – Ukraine. Chernihiv oblast is in the most northern part of Ukraine and the city of Chernihiv is situated on the right bank of the Desna River, 140 kilometers from Kyiv along the international highway “Odessa–St.-Petersburg”. The city covers 78 square kilometers and has a population of about 310 thousand people.

Chernihiv is rich in both historical and cultural monuments. Twenty five percent of all pre-Mongolian architectural monuments in Ukraine have been preserved in Chernihiv. In the city’s museums, one can find rich collections of Ukrainian antiquities and folk paintings. A favorable geographic position together with the wonderful natural and climatic conditions of the city provides auspicious conditions for tourism development.

Chernihiv is not only the historic, administrative and cultural center of the Desna area, but is also a city of students, entrepreneurs, academicians and even cosmonauts, as among the graduates of the former Chernihiv Higher Military Aviation School were pilot-sand cosmonauts whose names are well-known all over the world. In particular, the first cosmonaut of independent Ukraine, Leonid Kadenyuk, studied here.

The Center for Medical and Social Mother and Child Rehabilitation, the first of its type in Ukraine, was created in this city. Youth theatres and puppet shows operate regularly and an up-to-date cinema palace (with unique technology of for viewing films) was built here as well.

During the years of independence, Chernihiv has built up its reputation as one of the leading higher educational centers of the Polissya region of Ukraine as two universities and the State Institute of Economy and Management are located within the city. In addition, there are a number of branches of other academic institutions. This educational base is a major source of skilled workers for local industry. In the city of Chernihiv, there are 60 big enterprises and almost 4000 small and medium enterprises, inter-sector institutions and other organizations. These enterprises produce unique goods of production and technical advances as well as a wide range of consumer goods, which can satisfy the needs of both national and international markets.
