Makiyivka: The Face of the cityThe city of Makiyivka (before 1931 – Dmytriyivsk) was founded in 1690. Due to the discovery and subsequent commercial production of a coal bed before the 1890s, Makiyivka oblast was established as a key mining region and Dmytriyivske village became an administrative, trading, industrial and cultural center, and the foundation of the modern city of Makiyivka. Makiyivka is situated in the southeast of Ukraine, 13 kilometers from the oblast center, the city of Donetsk. Makiyivka, with a territory of 425.7 square kilometers and population of 429.4 thousand people, is one of the most famous industrial cities of Ukraine. While the city is home to over 100 ethnicities, the majority the population are either Ukrainian or Russian. Makiyivka is governed by the Charter of the territorial community of the city of Makiyivka, which is the essential legal act containing the organizational structure of the local community. This Charter outlines a systemized code of principles, norms, rules, and traditions governing the implementation procedures of local self-government, the relations between the territorial community and the state, as well as other legal relationships. The Charter is valid on the whole territory of the city and it is the highest legal authority in the city, even over the acts of other bodies and officials of the municipality. Makiyivka also has its own symbols, such as an emblem, a banner and an anthem. Makiyivka is frequently called “Donetsk in the miniature” as all branches of industry functioning in Donetsk region are represented in the city. Currently, the city shows significant potential for economic development – large industrial enterprises have increased their production rates and new enterprises are being established and are already making a considerable contribution to the both the regional and national Ukrainian economy. Up to 6% of industrial output of the oblast fall on the Makiyivka enterprises. For a long time the basis of city economy were the coal-mining and metallurgy industries. But now the machine-building, food, and other light industries are well established in the city. Currently, the city is re-structuring its industry by changing the profile of existing production enterprises, developing technological processes on the basis of high-end technologies, and extensively improving the production activity of the local population. The city council and its executive committee intend to focus their energy on providing adequate living conditions for the city’s inhabitants and creating a favorable climate for investment.
